Thank you for your interest in The Colony Fire Department! This information sheet is to acquaint you with the application/ hiring process of our department:
Requirements for Probationary Firefighter Position in the Fire Department
- All applicants for probationary firefighter positions in The Colony Fire Department shall meet the following minimum qualifications.
1. Meet all minimum qualifications set forth in the published Notice of Employment.
2. Have a credit history which demonstrates a commitment to paying just debts. Factors which will be considered include the type and number of debts, reasons for any bad debts, extenuating circumstances, and any potential for the credit related problems impacting the applicant’s judgment and integrity.
3. Pass a criminal history check. Applicants will be disqualified from the hiring process who have admitted, pled guilty to, or been found guilty to any felony or theft, also, any applicant who has admitted, pled guilty to, or been found guilty of any Class A or Class B misdemeanor within five (5) years of the date of the application.
4. Be truthful in all aspects of the application, examination, and interview process for appointment to a probationary firefighter position in the Fire Department. Any applicant who has made a false statement in any material fact, intentionally withheld information, practiced any fraud or deception in his or her application, examination, interview, or appointment shall be disqualified.
5. Cooperate fully in the employment process. Any applicant who has failed to complete or satisfactorily meet the requirements of the employment process, by such acts as missing appointments, failing to return necessary paperwork, failing to notify the Fire Department of current telephone numbers or addresses, failing to cooperate in the background check required of each applicant, or otherwise failing to complete the employment process shall be disqualified.
6. All applicants must be able to pass various tests designed to evaluate the mental, physical ability, and character of the Applicant to perform the essential functions of a firefighter. Any applicant who is under the care of a physician during the application, examination, or interview process must provide a written release from that physician in order to participate in any portion of the employment selection process designed or intended to test the applicant’s physical ability to perform the essential functions of a firefighter.
7. Comply with all Administrative Directives of the City of The Colony which set forth requirements for applicants seeking employment with the City.
8. Have an employment history which demonstrates stability and reliability. Any applicant who has been involuntarily terminated from employment or who has resigned in lieu of involuntary termination for inefficiency, delinquency, or misconduct within (5) years of the date of application will be disqualified. Similarly, any applicant who has a history of unstable work, as demonstrated, for example, by short terms of employment over the applicant’s history, will be disqualified.
9. Commit to the following requirements of employment:
a. Obtain a Texas Class “B” Exempt driver’s license within six months of employment as a firefighter.
b. Be a state of Texas certified firefighter by the date of employment.
c. Maintain a satisfactory rating on monthly / yearly performance evaluation reports.
d. Be a state of Texas certified paramedic by the date of employment.
e. Attend and complete successfully The Colony Fire Department’s Medical Control New Employee training course.
This must be within six months of employment as a firefighter / paramedic.
Application
- Applications are accepted in person or by mail.
- All applications must be completely filled out and all required forms must be submitted with the application in order to be considered valid.
Physical Ability Test
- Our physical ability test is a series of physical performance events which is designed to test the potential firefighter’s strengths, endurance, and agility in a manner which parallels as closely as possible the physical demands of sustained emergency operations.
- Applicants are required to complete the test under time constraints in order to advance in the application process. Those not successfully completing the Physical Ability Test will be removed from further consideration during the current hiring process. Those who do successfully complete the test will be eligible to move forward in the hiring process. This will create an eligibility list.
The Physical Agility Test will take place at the Lewisville FD Training Facility at 701 Treatment Plant Rd., Lewisville, TX, 75067.
Interviews
- Depending on the projected personnel needs of the fire department, a certain number of applicants will be selected to continue in the hiring process. The panel will conduct oral questioning of the selected applicants. Based on responses to the questions, the panel will evaluate the applicants.
- The applicant must receive a satisfactory evaluation from the panel in order to continue in the hiring process. Applicants who do not receive a satisfactory evaluation will be removed from further consideration during the current hiring process and will be so advised in writing.
- The applicant will also be ineligible to be considered for employment with The Colony Fire Department for a period not less than one year.
- Applicants who satisfactorily complete the Applicant Interview Panel will be processed and sent on to the next step.
Personal History \ Background Investigation/ Polygraph Exam
- These applicants will be given a Personal History Statement and a polygraph exam packet to be filled out and returned to the department. At that time each applicant will be subject to a thorough background investigation including a polygraph exam.
-Personal and employment references will be contacted. Checks will also be made of the Applicant’s credit history, driving record, and any criminal record. Persons who successfully pass the background investigation will be scheduled for either a follow-up interview or an interview with the Fire Chief.
Conditional Offer of Employment
- Once successfully completing all previous aspects of the hiring process, the applicant will be given a Conditional Offer of Employment by the Chief of The Colony Fire Department. The offer of employment will be conditional on the applicant’s ability to successfully pass a Psychological evaluation, Medical evaluation, and Drug screen urinalysis.
Psychological Examination
- This evaluation will consist of a battery of psychological tests designed to evaluate the applicants to handle the mental and emotional aspects of the duties of a firefighter.
Medical Examination and Pre-Employment Drug Screen
- Upon successful completion of the psychological examination, the applicant will be scheduled to take a pre-employment medical examination and drug screen.
- The medical examination will be conducted to ensure that the applicant meets the medical requirements set by the City of The Colony. The Applicant’s visual acuity must be at least 20/40 in each eye without correction; each eye must be corrected to 20/20, and must be free from color blindness.
- The applicant will be given a drug screen urinalysis to determine the presence of any illegal drugs. Applicants who do not meet these requirements will be removed from consideration during the current hiring process and will be so advised in writing.
Offer of Employment
- An applicant who has successfully completed all aspects of the hiring process will be given a final Offer of Employment from the Fire Chief of The Colony Fire Department.
