Nearly 20 years ago in 1993, residents and businesses in The Colony came together to build a playground. There was lots of planning, fund raising, scheduling, and building - all done by volunteers! This little town in Texas made a great effort and the result was a community built playground named Kids Colony. The years and hot Texas sun have taken their toll on the expansive wooden structures and the process has started to replace the beloved playground.
In 2011, Phase I of the rebuild of Kids Colony was completed with the addition of a nature themed play structure, pavilion, picnic tables and benches. It is now time to move onto Kids Colony 2, Phase II.
The second phase of the rebuild of Kids Colony will be an all-inclusive playground. It will be a fun and exciting playspace which ensures children and adults of all abilities can have access without barriers to play and develop of physical, cognitive and social skills.
The PlayTC! Task Force extends an invitation to the community to once again join neighbors, friends, businesses and civic organizations to build Kids Colony 2. Fund raising efforts will be underway soon! Be on the look-out for updates on opportunities to become a part of this great project. In addition to the community fund raising effort, a portion of the funding for the playground is being provided by the Community Development Corporation.
Kids Colony 2 will be a community-build project so whatever your skills and talents there will be a place for you to help. The build date is expected to be early Fall ’12.
